How To Show Unconditional Love To Your Kids
You love your kids unconditionally, but do they know it? On some level they do, but you need to demonstrate your unconditional love for them whenever you can. Here’s how you can show your kids unconditional love, acceptance, kindness, and understanding.
Tell Them You Love Them
It may seem obvious, but it’s so important that it’s worth being said: Tell your kids that you love them. Tell them often. Don’t think that showing your love is enough; you need to make sure you explicitly tell them, “I love you,” so that there is no doubt in their minds.
Give Them Positive Reinforcement
You should often praise your children, compliment them, and give them positive reinforcement. These things help show your child that you notice and appreciate all the great things about them. It will make them feel better about themselves, too, and they’ll continue wanting to please you.
Don’t Withhold Love as Discipline
When you discipline your children, be careful never to withhold love from them. In fact, when you discipline them, you should make sure to explicitly show them love so that they know you still love them, just not their behavior. Not talking to your child, not hugging them, and criticizing them during discipline can hurt them deeply. Unconditional love means you love them no matter what.
Spend Quality Time with Them
Quality almost always matters more than quantity, and this is certainly true of time spent with your children. Some parents work a lot, for example, and aren’t able to spend so much time with their kids. Other parents spend all day, every day with their kids but are distracted by other things. Make it a point to spend quality time with your kids, when you sit and actively play with them or talk to them or have a new experience with them. Give them your full attention.
Learn About Their Lives
You may know a lot about your children, but you can’t possibly know everything. Show your kids that you love them unconditionally by showing your desire to be involved in their lives however you can. Ask your kids questions about their friends, their feelings, etc. Give them the opportunity to talk to you, and listen intently. Always showing interest is showing unconditional love.
Be Respectful of Them
You expect your children to respect you, and you should show them that you respect them, too. Be polite to your children; say “please” and “thank you” to them. Ask for their opinions, and try to take them into consideration when making decisions.
Keep Your Promises
When you neglect to keep your promises, it really disappoints your kids, and if it happens often, it can make them doubt your love for them. Show them unconditional love by always keeping your promises to them, even if it means not doing something you want to do. If you can’t do something or aren’t sure if you’ll be able to, do not promise to do it.
